101 Common Sense Rules For Managers

The InsideCRM guys posted this managerial cheat-sheet today for anyone in a leadership roll. Thankfully they’ve also split all 101 into categories.

Meeting Deadlines

No one will be happy if your team has to rush around at the last minute to complete a project. Follow these tips to make deadlines less stressful for everyone.

  • 11. Only promise what you can realistically deliver. Don’t create deadlines that you know you can’t meet. By only promising what you know you can do, you’ll be able to finish on time.
  • 12. Set clear goals. Once you know what you need to accomplish, it helps to know how and when you want to do it. Put your goals down on paper and make sure everyone on your team gets a copy.
  • There is no question the key to a successful team is good leadership. Could we possibly add to this exhaustive list?

Diet Tips & More for a Healthy and Trim Body

Posted by brad on 24th August 2007

    Healthy Eating

Last week The Secret to a Healthy Body talked about the physical things you should do to have a healthy body. This week, this article discusses the diet tips and more for keeping healthy and trim.

    1. Timing. Try to eat every 3-4 hours so that you never get so hungry that you’re tempted to overeat at mealtime. Have breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and post-dinner snack. Don’t skip breakfast or any meal for that matter. You’ll make yourself too hungry and you’ll overeat at the next meal. If you try to starve yourself you’re body will go into starvation mode where your metabolism will slow down drastically, keeping you from losing weight and actually making you more likely to hold onto calories the next time you do eat.

Running very late today which meant i had to go a different way to the station. On the way i noticed these blossoms in full bloom, a great row of them opposite the station. I have to remember to find out how these look in summer, I might have to add them to future landscaping.

Automatically download new TV shows over BitTorrent with ted

Posted by brad on 16th August 2007

Now this looks way cool I’ve had TVTad running for a few years it’s not under active development anymore and often fails in way that are far too annoying to understand. I now have this whole layer of stuff around TVTad to manage it, restarts - moving files etc. Hopefully Ted will be better.

    Family History Set on Flickr

Posted by brad on 14th August 2007

I’ve started a new set on Flickr for all the historical family pictures. I’ve added the last batch, but there are all the previous ones to add too. I’m so impressed that the various people have collected them and still have them - I’d be dreaful at that, but I’m equally as impressed with the restoration work that has been done on these things magnificent job all of them.

More later when I add them to this growing set.

    Check it out here.

    AppleTV Encoding How to

Posted by brad on 12th August 2007

You need this article  to get started, it covers the mp4 and h.264 encoding in some detail using mediafork (now known as handbrake).

So far I’ve no idea how it pans out, I dove right in to the encoding - fingers appropriately twisted, we’ll see tomorrow :)

Update: Headfirst didn’t pan out for me, first pass encoding went fine but the second pass just dumped screens and screens of errors, will have to find a smaller vid to experiment with, or read the article :)

    The Wall

Posted by brad on 11th August 2007

Buzz was that this wall was going to be all hierarchical and symetrical, this is completely not what a first-timer would have designed, but it looks brilliant! Very impressive.

Cracking Open the HTC Trinity (D810)

Posted by brad on 6th August 2007

So two weeks ago I decided I’d had enough of the dodgy answer button on the trinity, so I decided I’d send it off for warranty repair. I know it was two weeks ago because I’m very aware it took two weeks for them to repair it.

It arrived back on Thursday afternoon. I got it all setup again, all setup that is as a mobile email device because it sure as hell wasn’t a mobile phone. A phone is used to converse, not something possible with my newly mute phone. The loudspeaker was fine, but the earpiece for phone calls was busted.

Facing another two weeks without the phone wasn’t going to work, so I decided I liked the idea that maybe they just hadn’t connected something back up and I really should pull it apart myself.First off with the case, I needed a mid-small torx for five screws, the fifth is obscured here in this pic by the stylus head which I hadn’t yet removed from the case.

Next the top of the case has three tab snaplocks to be pried open gently, then another two on each side of the case before popping the back enclosure over the usb jack on the bottom and off the device.

Rid of the mid plate the next step is to remove the three very small philips heads, the last is a tiny black one at the bottom end of the case. Once this is complete the board is apart from the screen. And there in the clear is the repair job screw up, the ear piece speaker has been placed in upside down. Phone is all back in working order and no two week trip to the repair shop!
