Nate True - creator of Tap Tap Revenge and old-school iPhone hacking guru - has posted a set of detailed instructions for tethering with the iPhone 3G - so that you can make use of its 3G speeds as a modem for a laptop or similar.
The process requires a jailbroken iPhone 3G, involves a relatively lengthy set of steps on both the iPhone and a desktop browser, and is not for the faint of heart for sure. It is also absolutely against the terms of your AT&T contract and doing it could leave you exposed to data overage charges!
If you’re cool with all of the above warnings and keen to give tethering a crack, check out Nate’s step-by-step guide HERE …

Windows only: Free application DVD Catalyst Free rips videos from DVDs to device-friendly formats for your iPod, iPhone, PSP, PS3, Xbox, smartphone, and more in one simple click. Normally we prefer previously mentioned HandBrake for this job, but DVD Catalyst Free is much friendlier if a quick and simple rip is all you’re looking for. Either way, DVD Catalyst Free is worth a download. If it’s not quite what you’re looking for, check out our five best DVD ripping tools for more great ripping tools. DVD Catalyst Free is freeware, Windows only. A shareware version of DVD Catalyst is available if you need an expanded feature set, but the free version should be plenty for most.

A couple weeks back I posted on a few sites that you can use to measure your connection speeds on the iPhone. One of them was the well-know DSL Reports site, which at the time did not offer a very iPhone friendly page.
Well … now they do. They’ve got a nicely iPhone optimized page for all your EDGE, 3G, WiFi and even (God forbid) GPRS testing needs. This is good stuff, as DSL Reports has always been one of the best testing sites to use.
Check out the iPhone optimized page at:

Just spotted this one via a post over at Gear Diary, and watched a video demo of this new iPhone ringtone making application called iRinger.
iRinger looks like a very good free option for ringtone creation - offering a very easy to use interface and a good, complete set of features - even down to letting you choose to export a newly created ringtone direct to iTunes or using SSH to directly transfer it to the iPhone.
This one is a Windows only application for now, so I’ve not given it a try as yet (too lazy just now to get iTunes setup on Fusion) - but it looks awfully good in the demo. Here’s some of the highlights of its feature list:

I got to make a new Family member tag today for Ben. On the way to dinner last night I’m sure Rod sounded like he said his name was Benjamin “Rufus”. I couldn’t work out the afro-american cotton-field link for those guys, but didn’t want to offend him by asking. All was ok this morning with the middle name clarified as “Rupert” I know how much the guys wanted to call him Brad, I’m glad they held back and just matched up 3/4 of our initials - Brad Raymond Tom Aurisch v Benjamin Rupert Aurisch :)

Well it feels that way anyway, after upgrading the display last month, and with the new video camera and everything, the PC has just not been able to cut it. Yesterday I picked up an Invidia 8600 512mb PCI-E card for $80, and a step up to a e4600 processor for $130. P4 at 1.8 stepped up to 2.4 Core 2 Duo. A motherboard upgrade could have put me into the super fast league, but on it’s own this $210 is well spent.
Optus 3G is free until August 31st!!!, so that is the other “Speed” item on the weekend. I picked up a pre-paid card so I can divert work calls to the iphone on the weekends. I’m showing off last night when I realise it has a 3g service I shut everything down as a quick as possible, imagining my $30 pre-paid sim smoked in 5 minutes. I got home and called Optus to get the 3G service disabled. This morning the balance hadn’t decreased so I started to wonder if there wasn’t some hack here where the combination of unactivated iphone and unactivated sim led to free data. Of course there was a far less attractive explanation, all Optus 3G is free until the end of August!!!! I’ve been going nuts on the net all day :)
BTW I’m downloading more and more of the Colbert report, it’s Denny Crane republican humor in a news format.
