Blue King Brown

Posted by brad on 30th August 2008

I’ve had these guys in my pocket for months now, today I finally remembered to check them out. Pretty ordinary day for me today, the up beat of this album was a welcome change.

I’m not normally a reggae fan, but the beats and percussive funk in almost every track is neck snapping addictive. Check it out.

Timor v South Ossetia

Posted by brad on 30th August 2008

Apart from the size of the stakes, there is no moral difference.

The little time I’ve spent taking in information about this issue for the past few weeks had given me the impression there was something I was missing, there must be some reason why Russia was so out of bounds here v our response in Timor. There is no difference, in fact following the US-Polish agreement on anti-missile defences (including defensive patriots!) there is plenty of good reason for Russia to stay firm.

I got a better understanding and this article from a friend at work today, definitely worth a read.

MythBusters Build a 1100-Barrel Paintball Gun to Paint the Mona Lisa, Instantly [Leonardo Duurrrr Vinci]

Posted by brad on 29th August 2008

In a presentation made at Nvidia’s NVISION show this week, Adam and Jamie unveiled a 1100 barrel paintball gun and—in an instant—painted a pretty convincing (if slightly drippy) Mona Lisa. In typical MythBusters fashion, the incredibly elaborate experiment was only tenuously linked to their hypothesis. The presentation was intended to represent the difference in operation between single and multicore processors, referring to current gen CPUs versus GPUs, respectively.

Of course, the reality of parallel computing is much more complex than the MythBusters are making it seem here, but as with many of the experiments on their TV show, the sheer ridiculousness of this demonstration makes its questionable veracity completely, totally, seriously excusable. Now that they’ve built this thing, the MythBusters have a clear and undeniable responsibility to turn it on a human and put the results on TV. Thanks in advance, guys. [TGDaily via CrunchGear]

Bloomberg News Accidentally Publishes Draft of Steve Jobs’s Obituary [Oops]

Posted by brad on 29th August 2008

Note to Bloomberg News employees: when you’re in the system updating your draft of Steve Jobs’s obituary, do NOT press publish. That, though, is exactly what happened late last night, as sleuthed by our buddies over at Gawker. Now, pre-writing obits for prominent figures such as the Steve, in good health and in bad, is totally S.O.P. in the media—so this should not be viewed as yet another non-statement on Jobs’s personal health. But unfortunately, we’re all going to die (but not all of us will come back more powerful than you can possibly imagine), so reading this and imagining a world without Steve is more an entertaining mind fuck than anything else. And that’s just for us—imagine what it must be like to read your own obituary. Read on for an excerpt, with more over at Gawker.

I imagine they’re ducking eye-laser beams over in the Bloomberg newsroom, being volleyed all the way from Cupertino. More at: [Gawker]
